Ones2Watch Mix | Amy Becker

This weeks Ones2Watch mix and interview as sourced by the team at Urban Nerds comes from Amy Becker a talent currently rising through the ranks at a fast pace. At the young age of 19 Amy has residencies in both London and Leeds, and her unique ability to mix homegrown bass such as grime and garage with American hip-hop and trap influences was recognised by MistaJam when he aired her mix on his ’1500 Seconds of Fame’ feature on BBC Radio 1Xtra last October. Amy’s consistent effort has gained her supporting slots alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, and she returned to MistaJam’s 1Xtra show in April 2013, but this time as a Daily Dose resident. Not only did she drop the Urban Nerds a mix they also caught up for a chat.

What have you been up to as of late?

I go to Uni in Leeds so it’s nice to be home in London for the summer. I’ve played out a lot, met some really cool people, and had a bit too much fun in Hideout Festival, Croatia – I’m looking forward to getting back out there to DJ at Outlook in September!

Whats your favourite track at the moment?

At the moment I’m a bit obsessed with UKG refixes so probably DJ Q’s spin on Prodigy of Mobb Deep’s ‘Gangsta Love’. I love everything A$AP Ferg is putting out right now too.

What music was played in your house when you were growing up?

Eminem, So Solid Crew, Notorious B.I.G and Burial…well that’s what was playing in my bedroom anyways!

Whose sets do you like to catch at a rave or on radio?

Spooky has duppied every dance I’ve seen him play at, I’ve seen Oneman and Jackmaster countless times this summer and obviously EZ. I love going to raves to watch experienced DJs because I’m constantly learning and taking notes. I haven’t missed a Diplo & Friends Radio 1 show since the series started, I usually listen to Rinse all day and of course I’m always locked into MistaJam on 1Xtra even when it isn’t my mix being played!

Whats been the highlight for you so far?

I’m not even sure, the past 6 months have merged into one big blur! When I started Leeds Uni last year I did a few amazing gigs which I’ll never forget. Last weekend I DJ’ed at a rave in a forest which was a first.

Top 3 artists to watch?

All the Tumble Audio crew, Murlo and Arctic.

What are your favourite past times outside of music?

It’s rare to find me doing anything not music-related, and it’s random but I horse ride regularly. I’ve done it since I was 11 and I love it, just a little hard to find the time at the moment!

One thing that nobody knows about you?

Hmm people often don’t know that I’m actually standing on a box to reach the decks when DJ’ing, but apart from that no dark secrets hahaha

4 things you always carry on you?

iPhone, earplugs, USBs & A Diet Coke

Top 3 guilty pleasures

Music by Drake, French Montana, and Ace Hood

Any other AKA’s?

People sometimes refer to me as my @ on twitter ‘BecksOnDecks’ but it’s purely a joke I had with my friends when I started DJ’ing at 14. I’m gonna try bring myself to change it on my 20th Birthday next month

Whats next in the pipeline for you?

My BBC 1Xtra residency just got extended to the end of January, so I’m gonna be busy recording mixes – they’re aired every other Wednesday at 9pm. I’m excited to get back into the routine of playing out regularly in Leeds and in London this winter, and I’ve got some awesome bookings in the diary to look forward to. Aside from that just the usual practicing every day and focusing on what I want to do and where I want to be.
