This week’s ‘Trainer of the Week’ is the New Balance MRL996CB TDS Urban Cycling Reflective in Black. New Balance partnered up with urban bicycle manufacturer Tokyo Bike for the first collection of performance cycling silhouettes New Balance has manufactured. The 600C and 996CB are both updates on classic New Balance silhouettes; re-designed purpose-built cycling shoes whilst retaining the street-ready aesthetic of a retro New Balance style.
The collaborative project between New Balance and Tokyo Bike has been in the pipeline for quite some time now, following up the collaborative capsule collection with Boston based bicycle frame manufacturers Firefly. The aim of this collection is to bridge the gap between the functionality and lifestyle footwear; through the design of a street-ready silhouette that can be worn as a day-to-day style as well as on the commute to and from home. The 600C is an update on the archive 1980s 620 silhouette, while the 996 has been reengineered to double up as a functioning cycling silhouette.
The MRL996CB is a simply styled functioning cycling shoe designed by Shugo Moritani for the Spring 2015 C-Series. The refreshing design is intended to accommodate individuals that frequently ride bikes through Metropolitan cities. The upper is constructed from a durable synthetic textile material, with tonal synthetic suede overlays around the toe-box, sidewalls and heel. The upper is accented with hits of reflective 3M on the rope laces, tongue branding and heel tab, alongside custom, reflective ‘N’ branding on the sidewalls inspired by bicycle reflectors. Other performance tooling includes: a neoprene sock-liner for added stability, a cork insole to minimise odour and enhance comfort, a hidden tongue compartment at the tongue to secure laces when pedalling and a plastic external heel counter in a tonal hue for added support. Underneath the lightweight functional uppers features an EVA REVlite midsole for impact protection and a grippy, rubber, waffle outsole for superior grip whilst pedalling.
The New Balance MRL996CB TDS Urban Cycling Reflective is now available in Black and Silver RRP £108.95 alongside the New Balance 600C which will be hitting wellgosh.com later this week. All of the styles in New Blanace x Tokyo Bike C-Series are available in limited quantities while stocks last.
